Tiny Lines For Smaller Movements brings together several generations of Japanese Canadian artists who highlight the smaller, quieter movements of art within everyday life. Local contemporary artists Madoka Hara, Rafael Tsuchida, Yuriko Iga, Kathy Shimizu, Lynda Nakashima, Cindy Mochizuki, Tonari Gumi seniors, and Toronto-based artist Maiko Tanaka present new works, including works on or utilizing/integrating paper, small illustration works, do-it-yourself designed birthday cards and celebrity fan-art.
Art and the everyday come together in Tiny Lines For Smaller Movements. Inter-generational artists working in a variety of media transform Lucky’s Gallery into a typical everyday space – a grandmother’s living room. In this installation within an installation, artworks and “natural” elements are placed side-by-side, creating an interplay between what is art, and what is not.
In one part of the constructed living space, a closet space is transformed into a shrine of sorts with Mariah Carey fan-art collected by conceptual artist Maiko Tanaka. In another section, birthday cards by Japanese Canadian seniors from Tonari Gumi are tacked up on a simple kitchen bulletin board amongst more traditional framed artwork. Tiny Lines For Smaller Movements integrates both traditional and contemporary sensibilities, and give notice to the beauty and meaning behind a handmade birthday card or a simple gesture.
Tiny Lines for Smaller Movements is a season event presented by the Powell Street Festival Society, leading up to the 32nd Annual Powell Street Festival, to be held in Oppenheimer Park on August 2nd and 3rd, 2008. For more information, click here.
