Support the Festival!

October 7, 2010

Dear Powell Street Festival Supporters,

Thank you to all who attended, supported and enjoyed this year’s 34th annual Powell Street Festival, back home in Oppenheimer Park. As the dust settles and autumn falls upon us, we begin planning for next year. 2011 is an exciting year as it marks the 35th anniversary for the Powell Street Festival. Watch for news of our 35th Anniversary Gala in the spring!

Having survived a year marked by drastic provincial funding cutbacks to the arts, we ask for your support. Specifically, we seek support for initiatives that are central to the Powell Street Festival’s arts and community programming, the types of initiatives that we might be forced to cut if the funding landscape were to become any more bleak.

Next year is the 10th anniversary of Spatial Poetics. This innovative artistic initiative, interdisciplinary before interdisciplinary became a buzzword, has enabled artists from diverse disciplines to collaborate and create exciting new works every year since 2002. In 2011, we will bring together original Spatial Poetics artists to re-envision their collaborative projects in a commemorative publication and performance. Your donation can help the Powell Street Festival produce this truly amazing retrospective and celebration of ground-breaking creativity.

At Oppenheimer Park itself, the festival continues to expand its popular Zero Waste Campaign. A key component of this program is the Bike Valet service, which in 2010 was filled to capacity! - it was the largest number of bicycles we’d ever seen in Oppenheimer Park! By providing secure bike storage, the Bike Valet encourages attendees to cycle to the festival. This reduces traffic and parking congestion around Oppenheimer Park. Parking then becomes available for attendees who might be mobility-challenged and need to park close by. In addition, reduced congestion makes it easier for public transit vehicles to operate their routes around the festival site, encouraging more of the public to travel to the festival by bus. Your donation can help the Powell Street Festival maintain the Bike Valet service as part of its work to be a sustainable and socially responsible organization.

All donations will be acknowledged with a tax receipt and noted in the Powell Street Festival cookbook that is to be reprinted in 2011. Donors may of course request that their names not be printed.

As Vice-President of the Powell Street Festival Society, I ask you to give generously your donation is essential to helping the Powell Street Festival Society achieve these important goals.

Help us to ensure that the Festival stays strong for another 35 years.

Warmest Regards,

Nina Inaoka Lee
Vice-President
