The Powell Street Festival takes place on the traditional, unceded and occupied territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
The Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO) is Tatsuya Nakatani’s large ensemble nomadic sound art project. Consisting of 17 of Nakatani’s adapted Gongs played with his handmade bows, it is the only bowed Gong Orchestra in the world. Local players from each community are brought together for a technique workshop and rehearsal with Nakatani before he conducts them in a public performance of his improvised harmonic composition. Through hundreds of performances, thousands of participants and audience members have been involved in creating these transformative art works.
